Mateusz Zalewski takes first with perfect score at UConn Chess Club tournament

Frequent National Educational Chess Association competitor Mateusz Zalewski of Hindley School in Darien earned first place in his division at the University of Connecticut Chess Club’s Connecticut State Championship tournament February 28th in East Hartford. Zalewski swept all five of his opponents with the only perfect score among the 28 competitors in the kindergarten to third grade section.

The win added 118 points to Mateusz’s rating, earning him a new career high rating of 795. Coming in third in the same division was another strong NECA player Louis Vincent Savarese with four wins.

Other top NECA players included Leo Koganov who earned third placed in the 7th and 8th grade division and Lia Ningxin Lavin who earned 2nd place in the kindergarten and first grade division with four wins out of five. Ningxin Lavin has earned a rating of 882. Koganov now has a rating of 1,595.
