Feb. 7th tournament opens NECA’s 2016 season
The National Educational Chess Association’s 2016 season will open February 7th with the Stamford Scholastic Chess Championships – the association’s 28th competition. Teams are expected from across Fairfield County, Connecticut and Westchester County, New York, as well as from towns beyond.
The competition will be held at the Italian Center on 1620 Newfield Avenue in Stamford, Connecticut, and will also mark the debut of the NECA Grand Prix – a competition between schools spanning the full NECA tournament schedule for 2016. The Grand Prix winner will be the school whose team consistently leads across all tournaments.
Strong contenders are expected to include Greenwich’s Brunswick and Whitby Schools, with the Long Ridge School and individual teams from Stamford and Darien expected to do well. The results table will be updated after each tournament and a winner announced at the final tournament for 2016.
“We’re looking forward to an exciting year of strong competition,” said NECA President Alex Eydelman. “We are expecting both top flight scholastic players as well as well-developed school teams who will have the opportunity to show their mettle over the course of a full year.”
Registration for the February 7th competition is available online at the NECA site. To ensure a player is included in a particular school’s team, all a player needs to do is ensure the school they are attending is included in registration.
